ISO 45001 is to replace OHSAS 18001: the changes, why and how they will impact you
“A new rule came into force in April 2018 from WorkSafe NZ. Failure to prepare an asbestos management plan or keep it up to date could result in a fine of $50,000 for a company and $10,000 for an individual.”
What this means to you, is that there will be no new certifications issued to OHSAS 18001, once ISO 45001 becomes a final published standard.
Existing OHSAS 18001 customers will have three years to transfer to the new standard, but all new certifications will be to ISO 45001.
You can move over to ISO 45001 over a period of 3 years, so the new clauses and the other enhancements to the current clauses can be slowly added to your current way of working and a gradual change over without too much of a problem.
Two new clauses will be introduced and a couple of enhancements to existing clauses.
Clause 4: Context of the organisation – is a new clause that underpins the management system and the intent is to provide a high-level conceptual understanding of the important issues that can affect, either positively or negatively the way the organisation manages its occupational health and safety responsibilities.
Clause 5: Leadership and worker participation – although a new clause it covers some requirements that were in OHSAS 18001. Top management are now required to have greater involvement in the OH&S management system taking overall responsibility and accountability for the protection of workers work related health & safety.
